Presen ted by Jerry DiMaggio, P.E., D. GE Senior Principal Civil Engineer, ARA Ass ociates
To assist CalGeo's membership and partners to better und erstand the benefits of and accept and implement a Load Resistance Factor D esign approach, CalGeo has organized a webinar series on LRFD. This is the second round of the LRFD Series although participating in Series 1 is not r equired.
The presenter of this series is Mr. Jerry A DiMaggio, PE, D. GE. Jerry has presented numerous webinars and live delivery training progra ms on LRFD during the past decade. He is internationally known and a certif ied master trainer. He has worked on approximately 1000 projects, in all 50 states and internationally. His technical specialty areas include design a nd construction of Geotechnical Features, risk management, forensics and di spute resolution.
Beginning on Thursday March 4th, 2021 participants will have access to a 90-minute webinar each week for four weeks. The webin ar may be viewed live at the designated time or a recording watched at a mo re convenient time. The benefit of attending the live webinar is that parti cipants may submit questions to the speaker for a short Q&A session at the end of the webinar. Sessions will be recorded and available to registra nts for up to 60-days after the program conclusion.
Mr. DiMaggio is a Senior Principal Civil Engineer and Associate at Applied Research Ass ociates, Inc. (ARA) working in the Research and Technology Deployment group . Mr. DiMaggio specializes in civil engineering and construction services r elated to design and construction, strategic planning, innovation deploymen t/implementation, and business plan development. He is internationally reco gnized for his accomplishments related to design, construction, monitoring of infrastructure features, alternative contracting methods, forensic asses sment, disputes resolution and innovation deployment/mainstreaming.
M r. DiMaggio has served on numerous national and international projects rela ted to limit states design (LRFD), risk assessment and management, innovati ve project/program delivery, and accelerated construction. He is a retired Principal Bridge Engineer and National Program Manager of Geotechnical/Foun dation Engineering with the U.S. DOT, in Washington D.C.
Mr. DiMaggio ’s technical areas of expertise include structural foundations, earth retai ning structures, ground improvement techniques, engineered earthworks and o ther geotechnical features for transportation, building and energy faciliti es. He also a recognized specialist on risk management, forensic engineerin g, and technical training. Mr. DiMaggio has authored approximately 30 techn ical papers and edited three civil engineering books.
Starts March 4th 11am - 12:30pm Pacific Time (PDT ).
Runs for 4-weeks each Thursday. Recorded sessions and materials av ailable for 60-days after the course to registered attendees.
The geo technical community has studied reliability based design approach for decad es. Many excellent published papers and books have addressed this topic and it has progressively been used on an increasing number of projects within most infrastructure segments (transportation, buildings, and energy). Unfo rtunately, until the last decade reliability based was not required nor wel l integrated within mainstream practice. Versions of reliability now are ad dressed in IBC, AASHTO and many international guides and codes. The introdu ction of such a significant change to practice does not come easy or transi tion smoothly. Concurrent with the increasing emphasis on reliability base d design in geotechnical practice there has been a significant increase in the national and international documentation of design, construction and mo nitoring guidelines, standards and codes which address the minimum Standard of Care for Geotechnical Features.
The primary foundational referenc es for this webinar series are the American Association of State Highway an d Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Design and Construction Specifications. These references were selected based on: their historical stability (first published in 1931), their regular annual updates and finally their compreh ensive scope related to the design and construction of geotechnical feature s (structural foundations, retaining structures, engineered earthworks). A lthough these references were not specifically prepared for other infrastru cture industry sectors they can and have been used for projects in energy, rail and buildings internationally.
Each webinar will be approximatel y 90 minutes in length and consist of a technical program followed by a Q&a mp;A session. All webinars will be recorded and pdf copies of the webinar m aterial will be available to participants for up to 60-days following the c ourse.
The topics for the four webinars included in Series 2 are:
