Presen ted by Jerry DiMaggio, P.E., D. GE Senior Principal Civil Engineer, ARA Ass ociates
To assist CalGeo's membership and partners to better und erstand the benefits of and accept and implement a Load Resistance Factor D esign approach, CalGeo has organized a webinar series on LRFD.
The pr esenter of this series is Mr. Jerry A DiMaggio, PE, D.GE. Jerry has present ed numerous webinars and live delivery training programs on LRFD during the past decade. He is internationally known and a certified master trainer. H e has worked on approximately 1000 projects, in all 50 states and internati onally. His technical specialty areas include design and construction of Ge otechnical Features, risk management, forensics and dispute resolution.
Participants will have access to four (4) 90-minute webinars. Sessions a nd materials will be available to registrants for up to 60-days after purch ase.
Mr. DiMaggio is a Senior Prin cipal Civil Engineer and Associate at Applied Research Associates, Inc. (AR A) working in the Research and Technology Deployment group. Mr. DiMaggio sp ecializes in civil engineering and construction services related to design and construction, strategic planning, innovation deployment/implementation, and business plan development. He is internationally recognized for his ac complishments related to design, construction, monitoring of infrastructure features, alternative contracting methods, forensic assessment, disputes r esolution and innovation deployment/mainstreaming.
Mr. DiMaggio has s erved on numerous national and international projects related to limit stat es design (LRFD), risk assessment and management, innovative project/progra m delivery, and accelerated construction. He is a retired Principal Bridge Engineer and National Program Manager of Geotechnical/Foundation Engineerin g with the U.S. DOT, in Washington D.C.
Mr. DiMaggio’s technical area s of expertise include structural foundations, earth retaining structures, ground improvement techniques, engineered earthworks and other geotechnical features for transportation, building and energy facilities. He also a rec ognized specialist on risk management, forensic engineering, and technical training. Mr. DiMaggio has authored approximately 30 technical papers and e dited three civil engineering books.
Recorded from a live series January 14th-February 4, 2021
Re corded sessions and materials available for 60-days after the course to reg istered attendees.
The geotechnical community has studied reliability based design approach for decades. Many excellent published papers and boo ks have addressed this topic and it has progressively been used on an incre asing number of projects within most infrastructure segments (transportatio n, buildings, and energy). Unfortunately, until the last decade reliabilit y based was not required nor well integrated within mainstream practice. Ve rsions of reliability now are addressed in IBC, AASHTO and many internation al guides and codes. The introduction of such a significant change to pract ice does not come easy or transition smoothly. Concurrent with the increas ing emphasis on reliability based design in geotechnical practice there has been a significant increase in the national and international documentatio n of design, construction and monitoring guidelines, standards and codes wh ich address the minimum Standard of Care for Geotechnical Features.
T he primary foundational references for this webinar series are the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Design and Construction Specifications. These references were selected based on: t heir historical stability (first published in 1931), their regular annual u pdates and finally their comprehensive scope related to the design and cons truction of geotechnical features (structural foundations, retaining struct ures, engineered earthworks). Although these references were not specifica lly prepared for other infrastructure industry sectors they can and have be en used for projects in energy, rail and buildings internationally.
E ach webinar will be approximately 90 minutes in length and consist of a tec hnical program followed by a Q&A session. The series will be presented over two time periods. The initial series, consisting of four webinars, wil l begin in mid-January 2021 and be presented each week. All webinars will b e recorded and pdf copies of the webinar material will be available to part icipants for up to 60-days following the course.
The topics for the i nitial four webinars included in Part 1 of the series are:
The second webinar series, Part 2, will address: cu t retaining walls, ground anchors and ground anchor systems, drilled shafts , micropiles, shallow foundations and fill retaining walls.
