Practical rock slope engineering
involves a unique blend of geology and engineering to develop a constructib
le mitigation plan. Similarly, rock slope construction joins together comm
on practices in geohazard mitigation along with difficult limit access tech
niques. This presentation will provide the geologic and engineering tools
necessary to develop successful rock slope mitigation designs as well as ex
plain how these measures are applied in the field.
Through review of
practical rock slope theory and case studies different mitigation plans an
d methodologies will be discussed. Case studies will include discussion of
rockfall, rock mass, and rock block mitigation. Included in this discussio
n for rockfall mitigation will include scaling, draped mesh, hybrid barrier
s, and rockfall fences. Measures such as rock bolting (passive and active
anchors), pinned mesh, and shotcrete application to mitigate rock mass or
rock block issues will be characterized.
