June Regional Meeting: Chase Center Development

Presented by Serena Jang & Lori Simpson, Langan

Last year, Langan won CalGeo's Outstanding Project Award for their work on the Chase Center project in San Francisco, California. As this was such an interesting mega-project, we wanted to hear more about the design challenges Langan's team faced. Join us on June 10th at 12-noon for a presentation by Serena Jang & Lori Simpson with Langan.

Project Overview:

Chase Center, the new home of the Golden State Warriors, will serve as a world class, state-of-the-art sports and entertaining destination. The development will provide seating for 18,000 fans and have a view deck and two publicly accessible plazas, 580,000 SF of office/lab, event space, retail, restaurants, and underground parking. This multi-purpose event center will anchor an 11-acre mixed-use district adjacent to a 5½-acre public waterfront park.

The plaza will contain the arena and concert venue, office space for Uber’s new headquarters, as well as restaurants and retail space. It will also include public space that will be used for a farmers’ market, yoga classes, health screenings, immunizations, healthy cooking demonstrations, and more. The idea is to transform the district into a neighborhood that boasts community engagement, continuous activity and foot traffic regardless of the Warriors’ game schedule.

Thrive City – an initiative driven by a partnership between the Warriors and Kaiser Permanente renamed the community surrounding the arena, paying tribute to the healthcare’s famous slogan. Thrive City creates community gathering spaces and investments in health and wellness programs for the under served populations.

Geotechnical Challenges:

This project is significant because the new arena will bring the Golden State Warriors back to San Francisco, and contribute to the continued transformation of the Mission Bay district of business, technology, housing, and healthcare enterprises. Some of the geotechnical challenges encountered included poor subsurface conditions encountered in Mission Bay, the size of the project (4 city blocks), and the depth of excavation required to construct the project. In order to fit all of the programming into the site, an excavation as deep as 30 feet was required.  This depth and size of the excavation were unprecedented in Mission Bay and presented challenges with dewatering, maintaining a stable subgrade, and supporting the excavation. In addition, the foundation conditions varied significantly across the site, with bedrock as shallow as 30 feet and as deep as 130 feet.  The challenges were addressed through brainstorming sessions and regular meetings with the owner, the Owner’s representative, the design team, the general contractor joint venture, and the specialty shoring and foundation subcontractors.
