Summary

Earthquakes can wreak havoc on society. Major earthquakes have destroyed and killed.  Surface faulting ripped apart buildings. Damage from ground shaking was concentrated in areas with soft or deep soil. Structures settled, slid, tilted, and collapsed due to weakening of the ground from liquefaction. Earthquake-induced landslides buried infrastructure. Earthquake engineers must understand these phenomena to develop designs that can withstand these tectonic forces. Earthquakes will occur. It is the role of the earthquake engineer to develop strategies to combat them.

In this session, some observations from post-earthquake reconnaissance are shared to illustrate how earthquake-induced ground movements affect engineered systems. An extended discussion session follows the presentation so emerging geotechnical engineering professionals can ask questions on how best to develop their understanding and knowledge of earthquake engineering. There are great opportunities for emerging professionals to address the many remaining challenges in earthquake engineering.

About the Speaker

Jonathan Bray, Ph.D., P.E., NAE is the Faculty Chair in Earthquake Engineering Excellence at UC Berkeley. Dr. Bray is a registered professional civil engineer and has served as a consultant on important engineering projects and peer review panels. He has authored more than 350 research publications on topics that include liquefaction and its effects, seismic performance of earth structures, earthquake ground motions, and surface fault rupture. He created and led the Geotechnical Extreme Events Reconnaissance (GEER) Association. Dr. Bray is a member of the US National Academy of Engineering and has received several honors, including the Terzaghi Award, Ishihara Lecture, Peck Award, Joyner Lecture, Middlebrooks Award, and Huber Research Prize.
