Bay Area Emerging Professionals Chapter Meeting & Presentation

Its a new year for our new Bay Area EP group with meetings the 3rd Tuesday of every 2nd month. The first meeting of the new year will be Tuesday January 21st and the next meeting will be in March 2020.

The meetings will run similarly to the Sacramento area Emerging Professional group at a cost of $20/professionals and free for students, including a casual dinner and presentation.

All ages welcome but talks will be geared to Emerging Professional and students looking to increase their knowledge in geotechnical engineering.

Summary:

Shear­ wave velocity (Vs) offers a means to determine the seismic resistance of soil to liquefaction by a fundamental soil property. Dr. Kayen will be presenting the results of an 11­ year international project to gather new Vs site data and develop probabilistic correlations for seismic soil liquefaction occurrence. Toward that objective, shear ­wave velocity test sites were identified, and measurements made for 301 new liquefaction field case histories in China, Japan, Taiwan, Greece, and the United States over a decade. The majority of these new case histories reoccupy those previously investigated by penetration testing. These new data are combined with previously published case histories to build a global catalog of 422 case histories of Vs liquefaction performance. Bayesian regression and structural reliability methods facilitate a probabilistic treatment of the Vs catalog for performance ­based engineering applications. Where possible, uncertainties of the variables comprising both the seismic demand and the soil capacity were estimated and included in the analysis, resulting in greatly reduced overall model uncertainty relative to previous studies. The presented data set and probabilistic analysis also help resolve the ancillary issues of adjustment for soil fines content and magnitude scaling factors.

Bio:

At the University of California, Berkeley, Kayen teaches in the Geosystems Program in Civil and Environmental Engineering and is a Senior Research Scientist at the United States Geological Survey, Pacific Science Center, Menlo Park, CA.  Kayen has authored over 350 research publications in the fields of earthquake geotechnical engineering, TLS-LIDAR, Structure-From-Motion geomatics, engineering geophysics, marine-geotechnics, and marine methane hydrate stability. He is one of the founders and a long-time steering committee member of the National Science Foundation (NSF) sponsored Geotechnical Extreme Events Reconnaissance.  Dr. Kayen has received honors that include the Middlebrooks Award from ASCE, United States Department of Justice Commendation awarded by the Environmental Division, and the NASA-Ames Honor Award. In 2017, he was an SFGI-U.C. Berkeley Distinguished Lecturer.  He is the current Vice-Chairman of the Marine Engineering Geology Commission of the IAEG.  He was the editor of a multi-volume U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper Series on ‘Earthquake Hazards of the Pacific Northwest Coastal and Marine Regions’.

In regards to access to Langan's office, the nearest parking is in the parking structure southwest of our building (and south of the AC Hotel).  See map below.  Parking is $7 per hour after 6pm.  If you have any problems getting into the building (since it is after hours), please call (408) 459-8853 and someone will come down to let you in.
