CalGeo e.Geo Newsletter

January 2022

Happy first Friday of 2022, Geoprofessionals!

In This Month's Issue:

What's New in 2022

In 2022, you will receive CalGeo's e.Geo Newsletter on the first Friday of each month.

In our effort to continue to support and grow our industry and to provide additional value to our members, you will see a listing at the end of each newsletter regarding any upcoming events for our sibling associations, such as the short virtual presentation from APWA-IE on applying for state and federal grants. They are offering this course next Thursday at noon.

If you have an industry event that you think should go on our calendar and be included in the Upcoming Sibling Association Events section, please email us at [email protected]. And, as always, you will also see in the close to our newsletter a listing of our upcoming events.

You spoke. We're listening!

We received 140 responses to last month's survey asking what courses you want to see in 2022. In response to that survey, we are currently working on scheduling courses pertaining to four of the five most requested topics: Slope Stability, Settlement Analysis, Technical Writing, and CPT and Liquefaction.

The GREAT NEWS is that one of the top five requested topics, Contract Negotiation, is already being offered as a Short Course at Conference. When you REGISTER for Conference, make sure to select the Geotechnical Contracts Short Course option.

The following summary describes the content of the Short Course that Ji Shin, Esq., General Counsel at Earth Systems, and Terry Scanlan, Esq., of Cairncross & Hempelmann, will be presenting:

"Contracts define the relationship between designer and client, as well as other project participants, and present the single most impactful way to manage risk on any project. This program will focus on contracting principles which frequently are of significance to engineers. Through the use of real-life examples and case studies, key contract principles which are frequently important to the design professional will be discussed, with a focus on California law. The program will discuss key contract terms and concepts including indemnity/duty to defend, limitation of liability, scope (and scope creep) as well as fundamental contract principles relevant to any binding agreement."

Of course, we are also integrating other feedback from that survey as we develop our 2022 Regional Meetings as well as future short courses. Thank you to ALL who participated.

Tell  us, what have you done lately? Project Awards are OPEN

Each year at our Annual Conference, CalGeo puts the spotlight on the best geotechnical projects in the state with our Outstanding Project Awards. A panel of peers selects the year's finest work in a number of categories, providing winners with a powerful new marketing message and everyone with the opportunity to learn from exciting, innovative approaches to challenging problems.

Dates: The project awards are for projects COMPLETED within the past five (5) years. The awards are given at our Annual Conference in 2022 but they are for projects that have been completed by the end of 2021.

How to Enter: Download the requirements (PDF). Submissions must be provided via the online form. The deadline for Outstanding Project Award Entries is January 31, 2022. A fee of $150/members and $350/non-members is required for each entry. Firms/individuals may submit multiple entries but will only be awarded a maximum of one award per category. Honorable mention awards are often awarded if multiple submissions prove exceptional.

Affiliate Member Submissions: We don't want to leave out our important Affiliate members! They can now submit under a new Geo-Contractor category with no restrictions on project budget or cost.
