April Showers Bring Salary Survey Time

If our job-board is anything to go by, California is in desperate need of geo-professionals. Organizations must be competitive with salaries and benefits to keep their staff.

This is the tool you need to do exactly that. We are kicking things off earlier this year in order to get you the salary survey results you need!

Attached to this e-mail please find the 2017 CalGeo Salary Survey Template. Please forward this template to your HR department or the correct person to complete the survey.

"Ugh! But this takes so long..." - we know your frustration with the time required to fill out the information. We've tried to make it as easy as possible by using Excel and redesigning the template as of last year. We appreciate your efforts to put this essential document together.

Rewards! If you complete the salary survey for your organization and return it to [email protected] by May 1, 2018 you will receive a printed hard copy mailed to you as soon as we have compiled the results. (It will be mailed to the person noted on the front of the spreadsheet)

Benefits: CalGeo's salary survey is a detailed summary of salaries, benefits and bonuses for everyone in your organization.

  • 7-different experience levels for engineers, geologists and environmental personnel.
  • 4-levels of experience for soil & lab technicians.
  • 4-geographical zones across California.
  • Yearly salary, bonuses, qualifications AND benefits summarized.
  • Essential tool for performance reviews!

Regrets: If you are unable to complete the survey, the cost to purchase one is $500. Don't let the time slip away - get yours in today and save $500!!

7 Ways Millennials are Changing the Workplace

When it comes to the workplace, millennials get a bad rap. The generation (loosely defined as those born after 1982 and before 2004) tend to to be labeled lazy, entitled and glued to their iPhones. But a recent survey conducted by Gallup shows that they're more aligned with other generations when it comes to contentment in the workplace than you may think.

But what’s surprising is that the changes millennials are pushing for in the workplace are things that are desired by everyone. Regardless of age, we seem to agree on how we want to work and what we need as employees to be happy and productive during office hours.

Here are some of the key findings about what employees want — and you can thank the millennials in your life for demanding them.

Looking for new-hires?

Our job board is bursting with lots of positions available across California. The geo-professional world is wrestling with a shortage of qualified personnel. To address this issue we need to start working closely with the local colleges and universities to encourage more students to enroll in geotechnical engineering and show them the benefits of our field. If you are interested in volunteering to be a part of our Student out-reach committees, please e-mail Neal Berliner for more information.

To help our members, CalGeo has sponsored 2 students to attend the Annual Conference in Santa Rosa this month FOR FREE! Up to 4-additional students from each chapter can attend for only $100. This is a great opportunity to meet and mingle with students who will be entering the work-force.

We've added an Emerging Professional & Student Happy Hour! If you are an Emerging Professional or student, please join us on Friday April 20th at the Flamingo Hotel for a CalGeo Happy Hour. This is a great opportunity for our younger professionals to share their knowledge and advice with students about entering the work-force. Look for this event to continue in the future!

Prevailing Wage - What you need to know

Virtually each year this decade, California's state and local lawmakers have enacted some new prevailing wage legislation, and 2017 was no different. New laws taking effect in 2018 will directly impact contractors, governments and developers of public works projects, such as AB 1701 which expands contractors' liability for the unpaid wages and benefits of their subcontractors, and SB 96, which creates a host of new and potentially costly liabilities for contractors, developers and public entities.

CalGeo has partnered with Littler Law firm this year to present an update on state PWL developments. Our speaker, Van Allyn Goodwin, will discuss the past year's legislative and administrative developments, and offer preventive measures and practical suggestions for complying with California's ever-changing PWL.

The topics will include:

  • New and pending legislation amending the PWL, including AB 1701, SB 96, and other statutes expanding the reach of the PWL
  • Other laws impacting contractors and creating prevailing wage compliance challenges
  • The increasingly vigorous enforcement of public works apprenticeship requirements and strategies for compliance
  • Recent trends, including the expansion of prevailing wage requirements beyond public works
  • Compliance conundrums
  • Important preventive measures and practical recommendations

Program: 7:30am Breakfast & registration, 8:00-9:30am Seminar. Short and sweet and get on with your day!

Cost: $60 Members, $75 Non-members

Props to Blackburn Consulting, Winner of the 2018 Engineering Excellence Award

Blackburn Consulting received a Merit Award at ACEC California's 2018 Engineering Excellence Awards Banquet. On the Cosumnes River Boulevard Extension & I-5 Interchange project, certain pipelines required no additional loading from the planned roadway and interchange ramp embankments. Blackburn recommended use of an innovative material (previous lightweight cellular concrete) at about half the cost of other alternatives. Read more about this project and Blackburn’s engineering solution here.

Have your received an award for excellence in your field?

We'd love to hear about it and feature you right here in our e.Geo. E-mail [email protected] and send us the details!
